Much has changed in the world of journalism over the past 10 years. Today, readers demand relevant topics that promote discussion and innovative design that catches the eye. This year, the Rebel Rouser newspaper staff’s goal was to push the envelope and to put into place the techniques they learned at national conventions and conferences. Some of the staff’s accomplishments were acknowledged through contests.
Three members of the Rebel Rouser staff earned awards at the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism convention in Washington D.C. Over 2,200 students from around the country participated in the two hour Write-Off Contests. The following students won honorable mentions: Senior Liz Hamm in News-writing, Senior Amy Huetsch in Review writing, and Senior Julie Bonk in Editorial Cartooning
In the spring, the staff attended the St. Louis Sponsors of School Publications conference at Webster University where the staff picked up 8 awards for their first two issues. Julie Bonk recieved an Excellent and an Honorable Mention in Editorial cartooning. Senior Mary Duncan recieved an Excellent in Commentary writing. Sophomore Mary Kabbaz recieved an Excellent in Feature writing and an Honorable Mention in Single Page Design along with Senior Katherine Dubis. Amy Huetsch won two honorable mention awards in Front Page Design and News Story writing.
