Business Education is part of a broad educational program, which develops the mental abilities, moral values and human relations skills needed to achieve personal work goals and contribute to a productive, just, and caring society. Notre Dame High School requires all freshmen complete either Computer Applications 1 and/or Computer Applications 2.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Required
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
.5 credit
Students will be introduced to the Microsoft Office Programs of Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. They will also learn to utilize WebQuests and internet research. Students will learn to format business letters, tables, reports, business forms, design spreadsheets, create databases, explore the Internet and develop PowerPoints with music. Students develop mastery of the keyboard by touch with accuracy and speed.

CLASS STATUS: Freshman
PERSONAL FINANCE
.5 credit
This course will cover automated accounting using Quickbooks, investing, stocks, money, budgeting, insurance and taxes. Students will use Quickbooks to manage a business to automate the tasks of invoicing customers, recording payments, paying bills, managing inventory and expenses, projecting budgets, and analyzing financial data. Course is required for juniors and seniors beginning in 2009.

ADVANCED COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

This course will continue to expand the students’ knowledge of the Microsoft Office Programs of Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Students will incorporate multimedia technology in the presentations and class projects. Students advance in mastery of the keyboard increasing speed and accuracy.
PREQUISITE: Computer Applications 1, or department recommendation.

ADVANCED COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 2
.25 credit
This .25 credit course provides experience in advanced computer technology. Students will acquire advanced skills in computer applications, desktop publishing, multimedia technology, databases, presentation graphics, spreadsheets, word processing, Internet exploration and research. A variety of software programs are available to the student. (This course may be taken for more than 1 semester. The student could earn up to 1.5 credit.)
The student will choose one (1) of the following programs to specialize in per semester.

- Advanced Microsoft Access - Adobe Creative Suites 2

This course provides experience in advanced computer technology. Students will acquire advanced skills in computer applications, desktop publishing, multimedia technology, databases, presentation graphics, spreadsheets, word processing, Internet exploration and research. A variety of software programs are available to the student. Additional Course Fee Applies. (This course may be taken for more than 1 semester. The student could earn up to 3 credits.)

MULTIMEDIA AND GRAPHICS

With a creative emphasis and hands on approach, students will explore creative ways to incorporate text, animation, graphics, sound, and basic interactivity into multimedia projects. This course will explore the fundamentals of digital media production and the technical basis of multimedia. (This course may be taken for more than 1 semester. The student could earn up to 1 credit.)
The student will choose one (1) of the following per semester.
Video Editing 1, 2, 3, and 4

Students will learn to create videos with Pinnacle or Adobe Premiere, as well as learn how to capture and edit digital video. They will learn creative ways to include digital video in DVD’s, websites and other multimedia projects. Students will explore storyboarding, camera shots, sound, compression formats, special effects, text editing, output for the Web, CD-ROM, and video.
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 1 and 2

The core of most multimedia presentations is the image. This course introduces students to the basics of Photoshop imaging software. Students will learn basic techniques of palettes, layers, channels, color depth, color & image adjustments for editing an image.

ACCOUNTING 1

In this course, the student will develop an ability to prepare and interpret financial records and reports. In studying the application of accounting principles, the student will be adding to her competency in a beginning professional career, as well as gaining an introduction to college accounting.

INCOME TAX

This course provides students with an understanding of basic tax-related forms they are likely to encounter. In addition, this course covers the history of taxation and how it affects various income levels.

MARKETING
.5 credit
This introductory marketing course develops students understanding of the marketing process and its relationship to the free enterprise system. Students will integrate market research, market planning, product development, distribution, selling, sales promotion, merchandising, economics, entrepreneurship, human relations, and advertising. Students will develop a business plan with a focus on sports and entertainment marketing. Activities will include marketing projects, ethics, communication, decision making skills and leadership.
