Students are required to take one semester of Health, one semester of Freshman P.E. and three physical education electives.

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may take Dance as their PE elective. All freshmen are required to take one semester of Freshman PE. They may take Dance in addition to Freshman PE, but may not replace Freshman PE with Dance.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Required Courses

FRESHMAN PE
.25 credit
The Freshmen will be introduced to a variety of physical education activities, including volleyball, basketball, other team sports, calisthenics, individual skills along with taking the President’s Challenge and the Fitness Gram.
PREREQUISITE: None
CLASS STATUS: Freshman

LIFETIME HEALTH
.5 credit
This course consists of five units along with a group presentation. Content covered will be health and wellness, the body, drugs, diseases and disorders, reproductive health, first-aid and safety.

Elective Courses

SOPHOMORE PE
.25 credit

The Sophomores will be provided several opportunities from assessment of Presidential Challenge and Fitness Gram levels, individual skills to team sports. This will strengthen personal weaknesses and lifetime skills enabling the student to lead a full and productive life while in school and afterwards.

CLASS STATUS: Sophomore

LIFESAVING
.25 credit
In this course the first objective of the individual is to know where, when, how, and under what conditions, she will be safe. The second goal is to acquire the skill to meet these conditions without endangering herself. Third, in case of accidents, she will learn how to save her own life and others. All swimming strokes will be reviewed. This course requires an extra fee for rental of equipment and books from American Red Cross. Upon satisfactory completion of this course the student will earn three certificates: Lifeguard, Community First Aid and Safety, CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

CLASS STATUS: Junior and Senior
    SOFTBALL
    In this course the fundamentals skills and rules of the game will be taught.
    OUTDOOR SOCCER
    In this course the fundamental skills and rules of the game will be taught.
    INDOOR SOCCER
    In this course the basic rules of outdoor soccer are modified to adapt the game for the indoor court. The game is played with a foam 
    ball by teams consisting of six players each.
    VOLLEYBALL
    In this course the basic skills of bumping, setting, serving, spiking, rules, and emphasis on team play will be taught.
    BASKETBALL
    In this course the basic skills and rules of the game will be taught. Some emphasis is placed on team skills and plays.
    TRACK AND FIELD
    This course will include the following track and field events: Running: Sprints, distance, relays Field Events: High jump, long jump,
    triple jump, softball throw.
    FIELD HOCKEY
    In this course the basic rules and skills will be taught.
    FLOOR HOCKEY
    In this course the game and skills used are based on ice hockey, except this game is played on a gym floor.
    BEGINNING TENNIS
    In this course basic forehand, backhand, flat serve, and partner rallying will be taught.
    ADVANCED TENNIS
    This course is a review of basic forehand, backhand, and flat serve, and an introduction to topspin, back-spin, lob, net drop, half 
    volley, and smash.
    ARCHERY
    This course is an introduction to the fundamental skills of archery.
    BADMINTON
    This course is an introduction to the fundamental skills and rules of badminton.
    GOLF
    This course is an introduction to the fundamental skills and rules of golf. Many of the skills will be learned indoors as well as outdoors.
    For beginning golfers, audio-visual aids can play a significant role in the learning process.
    RECREATIONAL GAMES
    In this course games such as deck tennis, shuffleboard, ping pong, badminton, bowling, and aerial darts, will be offered along with
    various group activities.
    CROSS COUNTRY
    This course is designed to help students develop their cardiovascular fitness on an individual basis. Basic components of physical
    fitness, including muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and cardio-respiratory endurance will be taught.
    PHYSICAL FITNESS
    In this course a complete program of exercising will be offered along with weights and jumping rope.
    SQUARE DANCE
    This course is an introduction to the basic formation of the set, the various patterns and movements needed to perform the dance.
    AEROBIC DANCE/TAE-BO
    This is a course in which aerobic dance gives the student the chance to dance freely in her own style, and at her own level. This is
    an opportunity to express feelings about music by jumping, kicking, jogging, stretching, and swinging. Tae-Bo blends the hidden
    strength with the ancient arts of self-dense, dance, and boxing combined with today’s great music. While performing, the body is
    going through a well-monitored fitness workout that strengthens the heart and lungs, slims and trims the figure, and leaves the 
    student feeling exhilarated.
    TUMBLING
    In this course the basic skills in tumbling will be stressed. In addition, there are valuable teaching aids and hints devoted to spotting, 
    and judging a competition.
    YOGA
    This course is a unique way to shape your body and mind. Yoga postures are very effective for maintaining and even restoring one’s 
    physical health, mental harmony, and emotional balance.
    KICKBOXING
    This course is an introduction to high impact cardiovascular workout that blends elements of boxing, martial arts and aerobics. A  
    variety of punches, kicks, knee strikes and other self-defense moves are taught.
    PILATES
    Pilates is a focused form of exercise that helps to strengthen and tone the body without automatically adding muscle bulk. A variety 
    of strengthening, flexibility and mobility exercises are taught.
    STEP AEROBICS
    In step aerobics you are combining an anaerobic exercise while moving in an aerobic state. Free movement of step aerobics uses all 
    three muscle energy conditions. This results in more calories expended for the amount of time spent.

DANCE REQUIREMENTS

The rational for this decision is to involve all freshmen in basic fitness activities and to introduce them to a variety of individual skills and team sports.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

DANCE-BEGINNER
.25 credit

This course is an introduction to the basic vocabulary, steps and combinations of ballet/lyrical, tap and jazz/hip hop styles of dance. Students will put steps and combinations into routines to be performed in a required Winter and/or Spring Concert. The student is required to participate in a Winter and/or Spring Dress Rehearsal and Concert. Credit will be given on the student’s performance in class, dress rehearsal and concert, no written work.
PREREQUISITE: None
CLASS STATUS: Freshman through Senior

DANCE- INTERMEDIATE
.25 credit
This course is a review of the basic vocabulary, steps and combinations of ballet/lyrical, tap and jazz/hip hop styles of dance. More complex steps and combinations will be introduced. Students will put steps and combinations into routines to be performed in a required Winter and/or Spring Concert. The student is required to participate in a Winter and/or Spring Dress Rehearsal and Concert. Credit will be given on the student’s performance in class, dress rehearsal and concert, no written work.
PREREQUISITE: Beginner Dance and/or some prior studio dance
CLASS STATUS: Freshman through Senior

DANCE-ADVANCED
.25 credit
This course is for students who are highly motivated and active in the area of dance and are dedicated to developing their technique further. Students will put steps and combinations into routines to be performed in a required Winter and/or Spring Concert. The student is required to participate in a Winter and/or Spring Dress Rehearsal and Concert. Credit will be given on the student’s performance in class, dress rehearsal and concert, no written work.
PREREQUISITE: Intermediate Dance and/or many years of studio dance and teacher approval.
