MODERN LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT

Students are required to complete at least 2 credits of the same modern language. If a student’s schedule allows, she may study two languages at the same time, but she must complete at least two years (2 credits) of one of them. It is highly recommended that students continue the study of a modern language for more than two years, although it is not required to do so. Upper level courses are weighted and may be taken for up to nine college credit hours through St. Louis University.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

FRENCH 1
1 credit

French 1 introduces students to spoken and written French by means of listening, reading, speaking, and writing activities. Students learn through a variety of media—textbook, workbook, CDs, DVDs and online resources. Each unit also explores various aspects of French culture.
PREREQUISITE: Department Recommendation

FRENCH 2
1 credit

This course is designed to continue and strengthen the groundwork laid in French 1. Students are required to increase and improve their listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills, using the same variety of media as in French 1. The difficulty level of the activities is increased to be appropriate for the second year. Students continue a study of French culture as well as the portfolio collection of writing samples they began in French 1.

(Saint Louis University title: FR X110: Communicating in French I)
This course emphasizes oral and written proficiency while building on the basic concepts learned in French 1 and 2. Students are required to use French extensively in class. A review of grammar points already covered is undertaken and expanded, and advanced grammatical concepts are studied. Students continue to use a variety of media to supplement textbook and workbook activities, and are required to prepare and present dialogues and monologues on various linguistic and cultural topics. The course may be taken for 1 high school credit and 3 hours (second semester) of Modern Language credit from Saint Louis University or 1 high school credit only.

(Saint Louis University title: FR X115: Communicating in French II)
This college prep course is designed to strengthen students’ knowledge of the French language through review and practice of previously learned structures as well as through the study of advanced grammatical concepts, and to encourage interactive communication in French by discussing a variety of literary and cultural readings in French. Students will continue to use various media (e.g., CDs, DVDs, videos, the internet) to improve proficiency. Students are expected to respond in French in class. The course may be taken for 1 high school credit and 6 hours of Modern Language credit from Saint Louis University or 1 high school credit only.

* AP FRENCH 5
1 credit

This course is designed to bring into play all the skills previously learned in the first four levels of French, but at an accelerated pace. The course prepares the student to take the Advanced Placement examination prepared by the College Board. The course requires extensive work in vocabulary building, grammatical consolidation, listening comprehension, speaking on cue, and writing skills.

SPANISH 1, LEVEL A
1 credit

This year long course provides an introduction to the Spanish language through listening, speaking, writing and reading skills. The students will also use various technological media to enhance the language study. It also provides cultural information about Spanish-speaking peoples.

CLASS STATUS: Freshman through Senior

SPANISH 1, LEVEL B
1 credit

This course introduces students to spoken and written Spanish through listening, reading, speaking, and writing activities. Students learn using a variety of media—audio CDs, CD-Rom, videocassettes, textbook, workbook, and the Internet. Students are given extra practice and individualized attention. Each chapter explores a different culture. This level moves at a slower pace than Spanish 1, level A with more practice time.
PREREQUISITE: Department Recommendation

SPANISH 2, LEVEL A
1 credit

This course builds upon the groundwork laid in Spanish 1. It emphasizes reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students learn using a variety of media—audio CDs, DVDs, textbook, workbook, and the Internet. Grammatical constructions and vocabulary learned in level 1 are reviewed and new grammatical constructions and vocabulary are introduced. Each chapter explores various aspects of different Spanish-speaking cultures.
PREREQUISITE: Spanish 1, Level A and Department Recommendation
CLASS STATUS: Sophomore through Senior

SPANISH 2, LEVEL B
1 credit

This year long course is a continuation of Spanish 1. It builds on vocabulary and grammar learned previously as well as providing more practice in the target language. The course uses the second half of the text for Spanish 1. Technology is also used to enhance the material and practice.

(Saint Louis University title: SP X111: Communicating in Spanish I)
This college prep course strengthens and increases second language proficiencies through meaningful communicative, reading and writing activities which appeal to multiple intelligences and different learning styles; a variety of media, including audio CDs, DVD, storytelling, cinema, internet resources, textbook, workbook and cultural investigations are utilized. Latin American, Chicano and Peninsular cinema and literature are introduced through Global Awareness projects. The course is taken for 1high school credit and 3 hours (second semester) of Modern Language credit from Saint Louis University.
PREREQUISITES: Spanish 2, Level A and Department Recommendation.
CLASS STATUS: Junior and Senior

*SPANISH 3, LEVEL A
1 credit

This course is designed for Spanish students who love the language and want to take it more seriously but do not qualify for ACC Spanish 3. This course expands on and reinforces grammar concepts, skills, and vocabulary begun in Spanish 2, level A. Students will improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through various forms of media, text, and workbook activities. There will be an increased amount of oral communication and pronunciation both in class and with the teacher.

SPANISH 3, LEVEL B
1 credit
This course builds upon the groundwork laid in Spanish 2, Level B. It emphasizes reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students learn using a variety of media—audio CDs, DVDs, textbook, workbook, and the Internet. Grammatical constructions and vocabulary learned in Spanish 1 and 2 are reviewed and new grammatical constructions and vocabulary are introduced. Each chapter explores various aspects of different Spanish-speaking cultures.

(Saint Louis University title: SP X115: Communicating in Spanish II)
This college level, college paced course simulates the St. Louis University courses Spanish 115 and 210. The content of this course includes global awareness projects and cultural investigations as well as a review and expansion of key grammatical concepts, intensive vocabulary development and extensive conversation practice. Spanish is the language of the classroom and is the required means of communication. The course is taken for 1high school credit and 6 hours (second semester) of Modern Language credit from Saint Louis University.
PREREQUISITES: *ACC Spanish 3 and Department Recommendation

*SPANISH 4, LEVEL A
1 credit

This course is designed for those students who took Spanish 3, Level A or ACC Spanish 3, but do not qualify or feel ready to take ACC Spanish 4. This course continues building confidence for communication and uses primarily Spanish in the classroom. This course promotes proficiency through meaningful communicative contexts to cultivate better writing and to improve students’ reading skills with a variety of high-interest selections. Students will continue to use various forms of media to ensure success in the classroom.

SPANISH 4, LEVEL B

This course builds upon the language skills developed in Spanish 3, Level B. Students will continue to use audio CDs, DVDs, textbook and workbook activities, as well as the Internet. This course will further explore the culture of Spanish speaking countries, and will require an incr4ease in Spanish communication and pronunciation. This course uses the second half of the text for Spanish 3, Level B.

This course will seek to continue the development of language skills useful in themselves and that can be applied to various activities and disciplines rather than to mastery of any specific subject matter.

*SPANISH 6
1 credit
The focus of this course is advanced Spanish conversation. The student will use book, media, and internet sources to improve her conversational Spanish skills. Topics will include current events, social trends, and short stories. Classes will be held exclusively in Spanish and focus on advanced fluency skills.

CLASS STATUS: Senior

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

This educational program offers the opportunity to experience another culture, to improve modern language skills, and to explore the highlights of the country that they school will be visiting the following calendar year. Students will have a standard curriculum based on the country that we will be visiting, attend student/parent meetings, and be a productive and cooperative member of the intercultural experience.
